One of the first things people ask me when they find out I'm an esthetician is, "What should my skincare routine look like?"
Honestly? It doesn't need to be complicated, expensive, or involve 27 steps.
Whether you are 16, 36, or 60, the foundation of good skin comes down to a few simple things: the right products, used consistently.
So today, I'm breaking down the exact basic routine I recommend to almost everyone, no matter your skin type, plus the products I personally like (yes, I use them on my own face).
Gentle Cream Cleanser
Why: Cleansing is step one to healthy skin, but harsh foaming cleansers can strip your skin and leave it feeling tight. A cream cleanser cleans without wrecking your barrier.
Pro tip: Wash twice if you're wearing sunscreen or makeup. First to remove it, second to cleanse your skin.
My Pick: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser - gentle, hydrating, and dermatologist approved.
Hyaluronic Acid
Why: This ingredient is like a big drink of water for your skin. It plumps and hydrates, especially if you apply it to slightly damp skin.
Pro tip: Apply over top of a thermal face mist. I like Avene Thermal Spring Water.
My Pick: The INKEY List Hyaluronic Acid Serum. Budget friendly, but effective.
Niacinamide
Why: Niacinamide is like the Swiss Army knife for skin. It helps with texture, redness, oil control, and even pore appearance.
My Pick: The INKEY List 10% Niacinamide Serum. Lightweight and easy to layer.
Moisturizer
Why: Moisturizing locks in all the good stuff you just put on your skin and strengthens your skin barrier. Even oily skin needs moisture! Skipping it can actually make you more oily.
My Pick: CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion. Rich, nourishing, and non-greasy.
Sunscreen (AM only)
Why: SPF is the ultimate anti-aging and skin protecting step. Without is, all the serums in the world won't save your skin from sun damage.
My Pick: Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel. Lightweight, doesn't clog pores, and wears beautifully under makeup.
Your skincare routine doesn't need to look like a Sephora shelf exploded in your bathroom. Start with these five basics, give it at least 6-8 weeks of consistent use, and watch your skin start to change. Because the truth is... perfect skin doesn't come from chasing trends. It comes from keeping it simple and sticking with it.
